Short description
A new industrial career known as machine and installation operator was instituted at the beginning of the 2004 training year. Accordingly, under the aegis of the “1100 plus 50” jobs training program, machine and installation operator traineeships for 50 inexperienced young workers at 25 Bavarian metallurgy and electronics companies are subsidized by the industry organization BayME (Bayerischer Unternehmensverband Metall und Elektro e.V.) and VBM (Verband der Bayerischen Metall- und Elektroindustrie).
The new training program leads to a skilled technical worker qualification that is two years long (one and a half years shorter than the comparable qualification in this category), less theory oriented, and that focuses primarily on the acquisition of practical skills with a view to providing companies more efficiently than in the past with workers who can realize relatively simple tasks. Expert consultants will conduct a study of the two-year program, which is being realized for the first time.
Aims
A prospective study of the project will seek answers to two questions:
- Did both stakeholders – the business and its trainees – accept the new skilled occupation on its own terms?
- How can training for the new occupation be productively and intelligently integrated into existing operational processes?
The study will attempt to determine whether the two year training program fulfills the relevant criteria, and whether any modifications are needed, e.g. in the instructional and testing realms.
