Reading and writing, along with arithmetic and new media skills, make up the basic cultural techniques upon which lifelong learning, social participation, and employability are founded. As a matter of fact, those lacking adequate basic education are disproportionally exposed to the risk of unemployment and poverty, and with requirements growing no matter at what level of vocational activity, their situation is likely to aggravate further. Despite intense efforts and growing numbers of training courses, however, no comprehensive training offer has been proposed so far to meet this target group’s needs. Whereas taking isolated steps in this direction such as providing language courses have proved inadequate for long-term workplace integration, measures geared at vocational integration, on the other hand, often fail to cater for the needs of individuals with (severe) literacy deficits.
Against this background, f-bb is developing, piloting and evaluating a concept for vocationally-oriented basic education addressing individuals with literacy deficits. As its key feature, this concept closely links general and specific vocationally-oriented basic education content with accompanying phases of practice. Involving the participants in the real workplace setting and combining theoretical learning and practical experience, this concept adds a novel feature to basic education that may indeed facilitate both social and economic participation and long-term integration into the labour market. The concept is being developed in close collaboration with regional job centres and companies.
The project is conducted jointly with bfz Nuremberg and managed by f-bb.
The project
The conception will be published in the form of a manual for educationalists and transferred to those involved in the promotion of the disadvantaged through multiplier workshops.
The project is carried out under the funding initiative “Forschung zur Alphabetisierung und Grundbildung (alphabund)” launched by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. For links to other projects under this initiative, see the alphabund homepage.
