INGqua - Qualifications for engineers and technicians in SMEs

Research area

Continuing education

Short description

Engineers and technicians are among the employees who are currently in particular demand on the job market.  In Bavaria and some other German states demand for these workers now far outstrips supply.  This shortage will, given demographic developments, in future get worse rather then better.  At the same time, there is an increasing number of unemployed engineers, above all among those over fifty years of age.  It remains difficult for female engineers and technicians to combine family with a career.
An increased supply of well-trained personnel is vital to the competitiveness of companies and their ability to innovate.  SMEs have, as its well known, only very limited resources available for recruitment measures and staff support programs.  It is therefore of particular importance for these companies to be able to retain highly qualified staff and to ensure that their staff are continuously trained, in order to make use of all the available potential.  In addition, targeted recruitment of females with a technical education and measures aimed specifically at woman can help to deal with the worker shortage.
In the project “qualifications for engineers and technicians in SMEs”, strategies are to be developed for companies so that:

  1. gradual deskilling of, above all, older engineers and technicians is avoided by means of systematic continuing education;
  2. it is made easier for women in technical fields to (re)enter work and occupational training;
  3. qualification of technical staff to bachelor’s level is supported.

Aims

The projects aims to:

  1. use new personnel development and qualification strategies, appropriate to the company’s size, to prevent the early leaving of older engineers and technicians;
  2. to develop strategies which make it easier for, in particular, women with technical training to (re)enter employment;
  3. disseminate information by producing guidelines for companies and employees, events for companies and an internet site.
