ÄMiL - Older employees training in new styles of work

bfzThis project is being accomplished by bfz Bildungsforschung.

Research area

Continuing education

Short description

The competitive pressure faced by small and medium-sized companies is high, and increasing.   Demographic changes require that older employees work longer (retirement at 67).  At the same time, a shortage of young, qualified staff is already being felt in several fields.  The great challenge for companies is to achieve success with older employees.  Because of limited resources, SMEs find it hard to develop appropriate strategies for dealing with demographic change, and require support in doing so.

For older employees to remain engaged and productive, two key conditions must be met:

  • their skills and qualifications must be kept as up-to-date as possible, and
  • they must be fit and healthy, in order to perform at their best with increasing age.

Continuing occupational training which involves employees of all ages and occupational health promotion measures can make a decisive contribution to ensuring that these conditions are met.  Of importance is a systematic analysis of needs, taking into account both the needs of SMEs and those of their older workers.  Only then can custom-made and promising solutions be found.

Aims

In Project ÄMiL, 6 pilot companies are being supporting in:

  • systematically assessing needs in terms of continuing training and health promotion
  • developing custom-made action plans for meeting these needs in the workplace.

In order to ensure sustainability over the lifetime of the project and beyond, key people within the companies are involved and trained in the project process.  So that other companies can benefit from the project, the methods and results in terms of good practice are made available in the form of guides and publications.
